A Multigenerational Family Session | The O’Brien Family

The official motto of 2020 has got to be: it’s not where you are, but who you’re with that matters. That was certainly true for the O’Brien family this summer, as they were forced to rethink their annual beach vacation due to coronavirus!

Typically the entire crew – Paul and Kathy, their six kids and spouses (the “outlaws” as they call them), and six grandkids – heads to Bethany Beach to enjoy a week together and reconnect. Instead, they opted for a staycation at the O’Brien family home in southern Maryland, which if you ask me, just makes it even more special!

The O’Brien home is the quintessential southern Maryland property, with farm fields on one side and water on the other. I can only imagine how wonderful it was to grow up here! There’s so much room to spread out and enjoy the outdoors!

When photographing multigenerational sessions, I always warn my clients that it’s going to be CHAOTIC! Especially in a “vacation” environment, it’s totally normal for younger kiddos to have short attention spans. Fortunately we had a game plan and I shoot really quickly, so we got everything we needed just before the littlest ones tapped out!

These portraits make me so happy. I love to think of each household having the same big group portrait up on their wall, surrounded by the portraits of their own family. What a perfect way to always remember the summer of 2020!

Enjoy a few of my favorites from the O’Brien family session!

Understanding the key difference that could make or break your portraits, the distinction between posing and art direction, is something many […]
