Five Tips for Spectacular Tented Weddings

Tented weddings are some of my favorite events to photograph, but there’s so much more to them than what meets the eye! If you’re dreaming of a tented wedding, here are a few crucial tips you’ll want to consider.

Five Tips for Spectacular Tented Weddings

Anticipate a Budget Increase

First things first: let’s squash the idea that tented weddings are an effortless option for casual backyard weddings! It’s a huge undertaking to thoughtfully design, build, and style a one-time-use wedding venue from the ground up. A tented wedding is not a cost-saving option by any means!

It’s so important to manage expectations and go into planning with a clear understanding of the costs and efforts involved with all choices. It may seem like a tent in a field should be less expensive than a traditional wedding venue, but once you start accounting for everything you’ll need to rent for a tented wedding, this is almost never the case.

Hire a Planner that Specializes in Tented Weddings

Rain plans. Climate control. Running power. Building out a catering kitchen. There’s so much more to a tented wedding than meets the eye, and that’s before you even get to the usual wedding planning tasks! By choosing a planner that specifically excels in this area, you’re freeing yourself from a serious game of logistic olympics. While it may be the first time you’ve planned a wedding, there are professionals ready to help with years of expertise and connections. Be sure to reach out if you need recommendations!

Prioritize the Guest Experience

Though you’ll be somewhat sheltered from the elements, you still want to keep your guests comfortable at your tented wedding. Consider portable air conditioning or heaters depending on the season. Don’t forget must-haves such as restroom facilities, handicap accessibility, and adequate lighting as the day fades to night!

Your ceremony may be all about you and your spouse, but the reception is an expression of gratitude for your guests. Be sure to make considerate choices for your guests so that all they remember is what an incredible time they had!

Secure Your Rentals Early

Because you’re going to need to source every single item for your tented wedding, it’s crucial to reserve pieces early in order to achieve your vision. Start with the tent itself and work your way down, from the largest items (HVAC, catering kitchen, restrooms, etc.) to the smallest ones (linens, china, centerpieces).

Say No to Cookie Cutter Designs

The benefit of having to source every single item is that there’s endless design opportunities for your tented wedding! Step away from copying Pinterest and dream up something truly unique with your planner. Upgraded linens, colored glassware, unique installs, and custom floors and lighting are all fantastic ways to add personality. If you’re feeling stuck, start by taking a look around at your own home decor for inspiration. This is a surefire way of creating something special!
