A Southern Maryland Family Photographer’s Favorite Portrait Locations

southern maryland wedding photographer

When it comes to photography session locations, southern Maryland has so much to offer. From breathtaking waterfront vistas, rambling wildflower fields, working farms, and historic homes – there’s something here for everyone. As a seasoned southern Maryland family photographer and lifelong resident, I know all of the best locations for your next portrait session. In this post, we’ll explore just a handful of favorites!

Favorite Portrait Locations from a Southern Maryland Family Photographer

Solomons Island, Maryland

For the folks that just want to be near the water, it doesn’t get better than Solomons Island. Featuring quaint marinas, docks, and residential areas, this location is truly a gem! Take a stroll along a dock, take in some live music at the Tiki Bar, or grab an ice cream cone. I like the light best here about two hours prior to sunset. HINT: avoid the boardwalk in order to reduce crowds!

Solomons Fishing Pier

If you’re a southern Maryland local dreaming of portraits featuring the Thomas Johnson bridge, the Solomons Fishing Pier is the hidden gem you’re looking for. It simply does not get better than this view! Be warned: this location is a public fishing pier, and there will certainly be folks there to fish. Please be considerate of pier patrons so that we can continue to use this incredible location for years to come!

Susannah’s Watch

Want to feel like you’re in the south of France without the jet lag? The lavender fields at Susannah’s Watch feel like being whisked away to Provence! This romantic location is a huge hit with my clients, but the lavender doesn’t last long. Plan your session for early to mid June in order to catch the lavender at its peak. Additionally: there is a permit fee required to use this location, and it must be reserved in advance!

Gilbert Run Park

When clients ask for fall foliage portraits in southern Maryland, Gilbert Run Park is my first choice as a Southern Maryland family photographer. Surrounded by beautiful trees and a carpet of fallen leaves, it’s the perfect location for picturesque fall portraits.

Anchored Roots Farm

A wildflower lover’s dream! Anchored Roots Farm is the perfect southern Maryland portrait location for tall grasses and wildflower fields, with the Patuxent River in the distance. NOTE: this location is on private property and requires a permit fee as well as a reservation to use. Be sure to coordinate in advance if you’d like to use this location!

Newtowne Neck State Park

Beach lovers, this location is for you! As a Southern Maryland family photographer, I love Newtowne Neck because it offers a long stretch of beach as well as beautiful green space and sandy paths to explore. This location is well off the beaten path and truly a hidden gem.

Greenwell State Park

This location isn’t exactly a hidden gem, but it deserves an honorable mention as one of southern Maryland’s most popular portrait session locations. You’re likely to see at least one southern Maryland family photographer or two here when visiting the park, and it’s always a fun place to see colleagues at work. Luckily the park is quite large and filled with great locations, so it’s easy to find a great place to shoot!

When you have clients that love and appreciate art as much as Isabella and Jory, you find a way to showcase that love in photos. For them, that meant a National Gallery of Art engagement session. It turned out more perfect than I could have imagined. Including personal items or highlighting shared interests is something […]

When you think of wedding photography, your mind probably goes straight to the romantic wedding portraits, like the epic first kiss at the ceremony, or the newlywed’s first dance. While these wedding day moments are essential and some of my favorites to capture, there are other photos that are just as important but often overlooked […]

When it comes to engagement photos, I’m all about making the session feel personal and true to your relationship. One of my favorite ways to do that is to include your dog! For so many couples, a pup is part of the family, so it only makes sense to bring them along for this special […]
