In-home newborn sessions are always fun when there’s a toddler sibling involved, and this one for Baby Archer was no exception! I’ve photographed hundreds of children in my career, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s to embrace the chaos and let the kids run the show. The best portraits happen when everyone is truly enjoying themselves. Photographing Baby Archer and his family was a lot of fun – and we managed to capture some truly beautiful moments to celebrate his homecoming during their in-home newborn session in Leonardtown MD.
In-Home Newborn Session in Leonardtown MD
As a southern Maryland newborn photographer, I’ve got many tricks up my sleeve to keep young siblings engaged so that sessions run smoothly. We play games together, jump on the bed, and best of all, ask siblings to “help” with the baby. Simple, age-appropriate tasks like pointing to baby’s nose or fetching a diaper can help older siblings feel important and included. Plus, they make such great natural moments on camera. While there’s a time and place for the “Everyone look at the camera” family portrait (and we’ll capture it!), I want to also document what life really looks like at this stage for your family… and that usually involves a lot of those little moments.
Choosing What to Wear for In-Home Newborn Portraits
For this session, mom chose to wear a dress from the AWP Client Closet. The Client Closet is a curated selection of flattering, photo-friendly dresses designed specifically for expecting and postpartum moms. Many clients say that choosing outfits for themselves is the hardest part of planning a family portrait session – but with me, you don’t have to worry about a thing. I’ve got many pieces on hand for mom and a detailed style guide for the rest of the family to ensure everyone looks their best. As a mom and photographer, I know how important it is to keep these sessions stress-free. I want your portrait session to be something you look forward to!
Tips for Casual Newborn Portraits at Home
Once mom was taken care of, picking out outfits for her boys was super easy! We kept Baby Archer in a white onesie or swaddled up so he was comfortable during their portraits. His big brother and dad brought in some color with their outfits. Everything looked SO good in their neutral Leonardtown home and I just love the way the palette of these portraits comes through. I think that in the end, the Heck’s portraits look so casual and relaxed. It really does feel like a day at home, snuggling up on the bed – like they’re probably doing a lot these days! I love creating imagery that feels true to who you are as a family. That’s always my main goal, no matter what type of session I’m photographing.
To the Heck family: thank you for trusting me to capture your little one’s arrival home. I know that Baby Archer is already so well loved and I know he will continue to be as the years go by. I hope that you treasure the portraits we captured for you as a new family of four! Congratulations again on your sweet bundle of joy!!
