Five Tips for Flawless Washington DC Wedding Photos

So many couples dream of iconic Washington DC wedding photos around the city, but the logistics of making them a reality are a daunting task! When you get married in a city and want to capture portraits at some of the most popular spots in the area, you have to plan ahead. Planning ahead helps you – and your photographer – feel more relaxed, prepared, and ready to create magic! Over the years, I’ve learned a few things about creating beautiful Washington DC wedding photos that you’ll love… without the stress.

Here are five tips to help bring your Washington DC wedding photos to life without adding extra stress:

Hire transportation for the entire group.

Parking is a nightmare in DC, especially on the weekends! There typically isn’t parking available immediately near most of the most popular landmarks, so you’ll want to arrange for transportation. Make sure your photographer has transportation too! It will just make everything easier for everyone involved!

Get your permits well in advance.

An NPS photography permit is required at most monuments and parks in DC. The cost is approximately $140, depending on location. Without a permit, your group stands the risk of hefty fines and ejection from the parks – not something you want to deal with on your wedding day. Not only is getting a permit the right thing to do, NPS staff can also communicate key events that might interfere with your plans, such as protests or rallies common in DC. This allows you to plan accordingly!

Allow tons of time!

Plan on adding 2+ hours to your timeline to allow time for your DC portraits around the city. This should be enough time for 2-3 locations, plus driving time, parking, and much-needed breaks. I never want any of my couples to feel rushed – especially on their wedding day. So, just give yourself the time and space to breathe.

Embrace the chaos of the crowds.

You will almost certainly garner some attention anywhere you go in wedding attire in DC! Expect some friendly waves, lots of stares, and an audience while creating your DC wedding portraits. It’s all part of the experience!

Don’t forget about your guests.

I know how much these portraits mean to you, but they shouldn’t come at the expense of your wedding guests! Because your DC wedding portraits will take about 2 hours to complete, it’s imperative to do a first look so that this event can take place before the wedding even starts. Another alternative is to plan on an early ceremony with a long gap before the reception, allowing plenty of time to take photos in the city. Both of these options allow you to spend time with the people who came to celebrate with you.

Capturing beautiful Washington DC wedding photos is a lot of fun and it’s totally possible to get the photos you’re dreaming of without sacrificing your day! There’s something so beautiful about DC wedding days and I want all of your portraits to reflect that unique vibe! Check out a recent DC wedding for inspiration here, too!
