A Maternity Session at National Portrait Gallery in Washington DC

Congratulations to Lindsay and Kyler! They’re welcoming a baby girl, Florence, this month. I can’t wait to meet her in just a few weeks. To celebrate her upcoming arrival, Lindsay and Kyler planned a maternity session at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington DC. I photographed Lindsay and Kyler’s wedding back in 2021, so it was really special to be invited back to document their journey into parenthood!

Choosing a Location for Your Maternity Session

When planning this session, Lindsay and Kyler trusted me to choose the location. We were shooting in February, making an indoor location preferable. I immediately knew I wanted to shoot at the National Portrait Gallery in DC, which vibed perfectly with Lindsay and Kyler’s personalities and their love of art. It ended up being the perfect location and I’m so glad they trusted my recommendation! Even with the chilly February weather, we were able to sneak in some portraits outside the gallery as well as inside with the exhibits for their maternity session at the National Portrait Gallery.

Maternity Session at the National Portrait Gallery

Lindsay, Kyler and I had a wonderful time strolling through the National Portrait Gallery in DC during their session. The museum itself has such a variety of spaces and rooms to feature their exhibits, so we wandered into a few spots for their portraits. I love that it felt like a date for Lindsay and Kyler –  I just happened to be along with them to document it all. That’s what I want my sessions to feel like for my couples. This is a special moment for them to celebrate before their lives change and they become parents. I adore knowing that they’ll have these memories forever!

Inspiration for DC Maternity Portraits

Outfits play a major role in maternity photos, so choose clothing that is comfortable and flattering. I loved Lindsay’s floral dress! It was stylish and chic, but still allowed her to show off her beautiful baby bump. It was also a lovely pop of color against the cooler tones of the gallery. Many mothers opt for a flowing dress, so that it can move around their bump, but also through other poses. Whatever you feel comfortable with is the most important option!

As you prepare for your maternity session, don’t forget to pamper yourself beforehand—get plenty of rest, stay hydrated, and if you’re planning to have professional hair and makeup done, schedule it for a relaxed morning so you’re feeling your best. The key is to feel comfortable and beautiful, allowing the shoot to be a joyful experience that captures this special time.

To Lindsay and Kyler, thank you so much for asking me to photograph this moment in your lives. I can’t wait to meet Florence soon and I look forward to watching her grow up too!
