Cherry Blossom Family Portraits in Washington DC

girls run around parents during spring photos in Washington DC

There’s nothing more special in Washington DC than springtime cherry blossom season! It’s so magical and I love when I have the chance to capture family portraits in the Tidal Basin. This family just moved to DC from Texas, and in fact the date of our session was the first time they’d ever been to the Tidal Basin! It was so fun playing tour guide for them, all while capturing their gorgeous cherry blossom family portraits in Washington DC!

Inspiration for Spring Portraits in DC

When we began planning this family portrait session, Mom requested blooms and spring vibes during their planning consultation. Immediately, I knew we’d want to plan during the peak season for the blooms… and it paid off! I’d say the cherry blossoms and magnolias delivered and then some for this sweet family. I love all the beautiful colors and florals in these portraits! It really felt like spring had come to life as we wandered through the Tidal Basin.

Planning for Cherry Blossom Family Portraits in Washington DC

We met in the middle of a weekday during peak cherry blossom bloom and were treated to absolutely stunning weather. The Tidal Basin was bustling with crowds, but luckily I’ve been managing cherry blossom madness for years and was able to get us to all the best photo op spots. This is no small feat with the Tidal Basin reconstruction going on! Planning a session to capture these blooms really takes planning and creativity (read more of my tips here!). I appreciate that this family trusted me to take care of them in the busy area of DC – all while capturing their new family photos, too!

I adore these springtime DC sessions and I hope that this family looks back on their first trip to the Tidal Basin with fondness in years to come. Capturing cherry blossom portraits are always a fun challenge and so worth it in the end!

Welcome to the world, Bonnie! I’m so excited to share this sweet girl’s newborn session at home in Washington DC today! I photographed Lindsey and Andrew’s maternity session earlier this spring at Washington National Cathedral. Luckily we fit in their maternity session when we did, because Bonnie was born just 48 hours afterwards. Now I’ve […]

Congratulations, Caitlyn and Austin! I first met Caitlyn and Austin almost two years ago, when the two vacationed in southern Maryland and hired me to take their engagement photos in Solomons. Needless to say, I was thrilled when they asked me to travel to Pennsylvania to photograph their wedding as well! They planned a beautiful […]

Congratulations to Emma and Ben! As they start to plan their 2026 summer wedding at Herrington on the Bay (one of my favorite venues!), we met up for a gorgeous garden engagement session in Arlington VA. Emma and Ben chose the Bon Air Rose Garden as the backdrop for their floral-forward engagement portraits in the […]
