Baby Lucas | A Paddington Inspired First Birthday Session

I cannot believe that Lucas is already a year old! This was our fourth and final time together to document Lucas’ first year! We planned the cutest little Paddington inspired first birthday session for one of my favorite little guys. It’s been so sweet to watch him grow. It’s such a special gift to watch both parents and children grow and settle into what life is like with a little one at home over their first year. Since they have been a part of the AWP Membership program, this was his last session on the plan. So, we planned his first birthday portraits, inspired by their love of Paddington Bear, at their Maryland home and it was adorable!

Paddington Inspired First Birthday Session

Lucas’ parents traveled to London on their honeymoon and brought back a Paddington bear as a souvenir, which sparked a long lasting love for the character. It eventually inspired the design of Lucas’ nursery, actually. Naturally, it made the perfect inspiration for his first birthday portraits as well! We planned a Paddington picnic to celebrate one whole year of Lucas, complete with marmalade toast and carrot cake cupcakes. One of the things I love most about lifestyle sessions like this is that we can easily incorporate the Paddington nods without it becoming overwhelming – all while still creating timeless photos the family can display for many years to come.

A Tip for First Birthday Sessions

When incorporating food or any new element into a session with young kids, it’s so important to get the “clean” portraits first and save the fun for the end! As you can see, the whole family was covered in frosting by the end of the picnic. Such a fun memory for these three! I know it feels like the most of exciting part (and it is!), but it will work so much better if we save it for the end. Additionally, if your little one isn’t used to the food or snacks, particularly cake, I highly recommend trying to let them taste it or get used to the textures before your session too. Otherwise, they may not engage with the food. While that’s also 100% fine, I know some families find it disappointing. Either way, I promise the photos will be adorable!

More About the AWP Membership Program

Welcoming a new baby? The AWP Membership Program might be for you! The AWP Membership Program includes four full sessions (maternity, newborn, six months, one year) as well as an album at the end of the year. It’s such a perfect keepsake to remember your baby’s first year and it helps parents document every stage of their little one’s first year, without the stress of remembering to book a photographer four times. When you think of wedding photography, your mind probably goes straight to the romantic wedding portraits, like the epic first kiss at the ceremony, or the newlywed’s first dance. While these wedding day moments are essential and some of my favorites to capture, there are other photos that are just as important but often overlooked […]

When it comes to engagement photos, I’m all about making the session feel personal and true to your relationship. One of my favorite ways to do that is to include your dog! For so many couples, a pup is part of the family, so it only makes sense to bring them along for this special […]

Some wedding days are extra special and this one is near the top of the list. Jaclyn isn’t just one of my beautiful brides… she’s also my cousin. Being part of her and Billy’s Chesapeake Bay Beach Club wedding in Kent Island, Maryland, was both an honor and a joy. This was a rare and […]
