Engagement sessions are meant to be romantic, intimate, and centered on the quiet connection between two people in love. For Zack and Kara, their sailboat engagement session in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor was the epitome of romantic engagement. There is something about being out on the water with sunlight dancing across the water’s surface and the golden light wrapping softly around them that created such a perfect setting. Even better, the location of the session fit them perfectly as both Zack and Kara love being on the water, so a sailboat ride around the Inner Harbor was the perfect choice for their engagement session!

Sailboat Engagement Session

Zack and Kara first met in Baltimore, Maryland and they wanted to honor the city where they met and their story began. They hired Boat Baltimore for a private sunset cruise around the Inner Harbor. As the sailboat cruised along the water, they cozied up together and enjoyed the views of the city. We stopped along the way to utilize iconic landmarks such as the Domino Sugar Factory and downtown Baltimore for our backdrops. The city skyline was so beautiful, especially as the sun began to set over the water.

On top of the beautiful views, we couldn’t have asked for better weather.  It was one of those early fall days where the sun is still warm, and there is just a hint of fall chill coming in. Thankfully it wasn’t too cold to sail. Between the weather, sunshine, and the beautiful couple it was an enjoyable day out on the water.  

Tips for Planning a Sailboat Engagement Session

If you’re dreaming of an engagement session on the water like Zack and Kara’s, here are a few helpful tips to ensure your experience is relaxed, fun, and beautifully photographed!

Choose the Right Time of Day

For a sailboat session the hours leading up to golden hour will provide the best window for softer light that is more flattering, creating that dreamy, romantic glow. I suggest avoiding the heat of the day. Kara and Zack’s sunset cruise was amazing timing and allowed us to capture the most beautiful images with the perfect light. 

Outfit Inspiration for Sailboat Engagement Session

Light, neutral tones photograph beautifully against the blues of the water and sky. Flowy dresses, textured linens, and soft colors work especially well. Zack and Kara showed up in the perfect wardrobe for a nautical session. Kara’s white dress captured the light beautifully, giving her an effortlessly romantic glow on the boat. Zack paired cream slacks with a navy button-up.  It was a perfect combination that photographed beautifully, as they both complemented each other and the scenery flawlessly.

Outfits can make such a difference in how a session feels, and these two struck the perfect balance between polished and relaxed. When it comes to sailboat sessions, it’s important to keep in mind that it can get breezy on the water, so plan accordingly!

Towards the end of Kara and Zack’s sailboat engagement session, the couple popped a bottle of bubbly to celebrate their engagement as well as everything this next season of life holds for them. Toasting on the deck of the boat with the water shimmering behind them was the perfect way to end such an amazing session. Kara and Zack are planning a fall 2026 wedding at Kent Island Resort, which I cannot wait to document. It was such a joy spending time with these two at their engagement session, and I can already tell their wedding will be even better!
