When Allison and Kevin reached out for their engagement session, they had recently moved to the Washington, DC area and wanted to celebrate this exciting new phase of their lives in their new city. They trusted me to choose the perfect location that included beautiful springtime blooms and that was off the beaten path, away from crowds of people. A Capitol Hill engagement session turned out to be the perfect choice! With beautiful views of the Capitol Building, charming residential streets, and the incredible architecture surrounding the Library of Congress, Capitol Hill gave us that classic Washington, DC vibe while still allowing their session to feel intimate and relaxed. 

Capitol Hill Engagement Session

One of my favorite things about photographing engagement sessions is finding a location that feels like a reflection of the couple. For Allison and Kevin, Capitol Hill was especially fitting because they are beginning their life together in DC. These photographs will always remind them not only of their engagement, but also of this season of life full of changes and new beginnings together.  

We spent the session simply exploring the area together, taking in the architecture and springtime flowers along the way. Capitol Hill has so many beautiful little areas that make it perfect for engagement portraits, and we made sure to include them all. 

Consider Capitol Hill for Your DC Engagement Photos

If you’re dreaming of beautiful DC engagement photos, but don’t want to fight the crowds and tourists around the National Mall, Capitol Hill is a beautiful alternative. One of my favorite things to do here is simply stroll through the surrounding residential areas. There are beautiful streets and landscaping, historic architecture, brick sidewalks, and little details around every corner.  As we walk and explore the neighborhood, you and your partner can simply enjoy being together, while I capture everything as it naturally unfolds. 

Timeless Capitol Hill Engagement Session Outfits

Allison and Kevin chose the perfect outfits for the timeless setting. Allison wore a calf-length satin white dress with an open back that was the perfect combination of sophisticated and subtly flirty. The satin caught the spring light beautifully. Kevin complemented her in a classic navy suit, crisp white undershirt, and brown shoes. Their outfits looked especially beautiful against the architecture surrounding the Library of Congress and throughout the historic streets of Capitol Hill.

Since this area of DC embraces timeless architecture, more formal outfits like the ones Allison and Kevin chose work wonderfully here. Dressing up a little enhances the elegant feel of the photographs and creates a cohesive look against the historic setting. Whether you’re planning a Capitol Hill engagement session or thinking of somewhere else in the DMV area, I always recommend thinking about your outfits in relation to the location. Classic looks, elevated fabrics, and timeless colors photograph beautifully against the historic buildings and streets.

Celebrating a New Chapter in Washington, DC

What I loved most about Allison and Kevin’s engagement session was that it wasn’t simply about taking beautiful photographs. It was about documenting where they were in their lives right now. Their energy and chemistry together throughout the session was undeniable. Seeing these two laugh and joke together was incredibly heartwarming. I especially loved how present they were and how much they simply enjoyed being together. Being new to the DC area, it was so fun to explore their new city together and celebrate the beginning of this next chapter as an engaged couple.
