How to Prepare for Your Newborn Session

A posed newborn portrait session may be unlike anything you’ve ever experienced before, especially if this is your first child or first time hiring a newborn portrait photographer. The biggest thing I want to stress is – don’t stress! This entire experience is designed to be relaxing for you. Sit back and enjoy!

When to book your newborn session

I can’t stress this enough: don’t wait until baby is born to book in his portrait session! Traditional posed newborn portraits, like you’ll find in my portfolio, are created when baby is just 5-15 days old. This is when baby is still super sleepy and easily gets into those beautiful womb-like poses. Booking during your second trimester best ensures that I’ll have availability, and it gives us time to create sets totally customized to your decor preferences.

Once you’re booked in, you’ll receive a planning questionnaire to help me style your session. The studio has an extensive collection of premiere backdrops, props, and accessories – just add baby!

What to expect

You’ll arrive at the studio around 9:30am, ideally with baby awake and ready to eat! Once you’ve settled in, you’ll be able to feed baby while looking over the sets we’ve curated for your session. I work with an assistant, Leigh, to ensure my clients are truly able to sit back, relax, and enjoy their time at the studio!

Working with a trained assistant also ensures there are alert, highly skilled hands on your baby at all times. Your baby’s safety is my highest priority, and we’ve designed our workflow to be totally natural, comfortable, and safe for her.

We allow plenty of time for snuggles, and therefore a newborn session typically takes 2.5-3 hours to complete. You are welcome to watch us work, catch up on emails, or even sneak in a catnap! And we wouldn’t blame you at all for falling asleep. The studio will be about 80 degrees, with gentle white noise playing for baby’s comfort.

What to wear

As just mentioned, the studio will be quite warm on the day of your session. I recommend dressing comfortably in leggings and loose cotton shirts, always opting for soft neutral tones when possible.

Almost all moms are nervous about being photographed so soon after birth, but then find that these images become the most treasured as time passes. Rest assured that I will guide you into the most flattering poses, creating timeless images that focus on the love and connection between you.

Ready to book? Let’s chat! I can’t wait to meet your new little love!
