Nikki & Andy | A Stormy Old Town Engagement Session

A Stormy Old Town Engagement Session

That tricky forecast got me good yesterday! All weekend long, we watched intently to see if Andy & Nikki’s engagement session would get rained out. And all along, it seemed as though luck was on our side and the storms would veer elsewhere. But wouldn’t you know it, literally as we were pulling in, everything changed. The skies grew dark and the streets began to empty. I knew we’d need to work quickly and pay extra close attention to light, as well as keep an eye out for lightening! I won’t lie, I was nervous – especially knowing that Nikki was taking a night off from studying for finals for this session!

Fortunately, the worst of the storms did miss us, and we just had to deal with rain throughout the evening. Nikki and I both agreed, we’ll take a little rain over heat and humidity any day! Leigh and I loved getting to meet these two and hear all about their wedding plans. They’re planning a June 2020 destination wedding in the Outer Banks, and the blooming cherry trees tied in perfectly with the blush pink color palette they’re envisioning. Also, can we talk about their outfits?! Nikki’s soft cream lace dress was neutral perfection, and Andy’s blues gave the perfect pop!

I’m all about having my couples snuggle up and get cozy during engagement sessions, because it captures the way they feel about each other and not just what they look like. These two needed hardly any direction from me! Andy loved pulling his bride in close, and Nikki was stealing kisses any chance she got. Getting to practice on the empty streets of Alexandria is going to make wedding day portrait time a breeze!

Just as we got to my favorite Old Town cobblestone alleyway, the skies really began to open up with rain. Anybody else having flashbacks to The Notebook there?! Andy pulled Nikki in close and kissed her while the rain poured down, and it was as if they were the only people in the world. Of course, I may or may not have looked like a drowned cat in the street getting that photo, but it was TOTALLY worth it!

As the session drew to a close, we did a quick wardrobe change as a nod to Andy’s career as a firefighter. I have to give so many snaps to Nikki and Andy on those gorgeous red pumps! Andy bought them for Nikki as a Christmas gift, she was totally rocked them on those slick cobblestones. I’m happy to report that no one tripped in the creation of these images!

Please enjoy getting to know these two through a few favorites from their engagement session! Andy & Nikki, thank you SO MUCH for trusting me, despite a questionable forecast. A little rain has nothing on you!

There’s something undeniably captivating about the waterfront. Maryland’s waterfront venues, whether tucked along the Chesapeake Bay, lining the Eastern Shore, or framed by historic piers, have a way of making portraits feel expansive without ever feeling empty. The light shimmers across the water, the horizon stretches open, and every angle offers a new composition. Portraits […]

Many photographers talk about posing guides: where to place hands, how to stand, how to angle the body. And while posing is important, it’s not the only thing that makes a portrait feel alive. Understanding the key difference that could make or break your portraits, the distinction between posing and art direction, is something many […]
