Summer is almost here, and it’s one of the busiest times of the year for photos – especially for families with school-age children. School is out and everyone is together, so why not create new family portraits? If you’re looking for some truly unique summer portrait ideas for this year’s family portraits, this post is for you. As a seasoned Maryland and Washington DC family photographer, I know all of the best locations and have endless ideas for portraits that are totally unique to you!

1. On a Boat

If your family loves to spend time on the water together, that’s the perfect setting for you! There’s nothing better than soaking in the sunset on a sailboat, margarita in hand. Mix up a few boat drinks and let’s go cruise!

2. Lavender Fields

For those that love soft, romantic rows of fragrant blooms. There are many lavender farms in Maryland, including Susannah’s Watch and Springfield Manor. Lavender typically begins to bloom in mid-May and will last well into July, slowly becoming a more vibrant, deeper purple. Keep in mind that lavender is a pollinator, so expect bees to be present at the fields!

3. National Portrait Gallery

Summer is a great time for portraits, but the heat can be oppressive in the Washington DC area. If heat is a concern, an indoor location like the National Portrait Gallery is the answer. My favorite thing about this museum is the large, open air atrium. Featuring stunning architecture and indoor greenspace, it’s like being in a beautiful park with air conditioning. There are countless picture-perfect vignettes throughout the museum, too!

4. Rawlings Conservatory

Another great choice for those looking to escape the summer heat! The Rawlings Conservatory in Baltimore, MD is a plant-lover’s dream. There is a $100 permit fee for this location, so be sure to book in advance!

5. Day at the Beach

Let’s put our toes in the sand! When it’s hot out, there’s nowhere better to be than by the water. Pack your favorite sunglasses and floppy hat, because this will be a day to remember! Local beach locations include Newtowne Neck State Park and Terrapin Nature Park in Stevensville, MD.

6. Ice Cream Date

This is a fun way to keep the kids engaged throughout your session! Let’s celebrate summer with cones of ice cream and extra sprinkles. Don’t forget to pack a change of clothes!

7. Lifestyle In-Home Portraits

Most families plan their lifestyle sessions during winter, but summer is also a great time for an in-home session. Let’s document a day in the life for your family in the environment where you’re most comfortable.

8. On Summer Vacation

New family portraits can be the perfect way to commemorate your summer vacation! Especially if you’re traveling with extended family, this is such a great opportunity to document everyone together. I’d love to explore the destinations that are most special to you!

9. Constitution Gardens

Constitution Gardens is my favorite hidden gem location in DC! The views of the Washington Monument are stunning, and the willows are in full bloom by summertime. Somehow there are never any crowds here, either! The light is best here in mid-morning, so get there early to beat the heat.

10. Solomons Island, Maryland

I saved this location for last because it’s right in my backyard! Solomons is a charming little coastal town in southern Maryland that’s well-known in the sailing community. Waterfront views abound, making it perfect for a summer portrait session!

I hope this list has sparked some summer portrait ideas for you! When you’re ready to start planning your session, get in touch HERE.
