A Guide to Scheduling your Maternity Portraits

Scheduling maternity portraits can be an exciting and memorable part of your pregnancy journey! It also can seem incredibly overwhelming. Especially with the list of “to-do’s” that seems to grow as fast as your bump. Let us help you out with a few things to consider!

There is no one “perfect” week. Many women choose to schedule their maternity portraits during the beginning of their third trimester–typically between week 28 and 32. During this time, your baby bump is usually well-defined but not so large that you may feel uncomfortable or exhausted. Keep in mind, though, that the size of a baby bump varies from person to person and pregnancy to pregnancy. Some women show earlier and may choose to schedule their session during the second trimester, while others may want to wait until the late third trimester. It all depends on your level of comfort and your own body.

Once you decide approximately what week of your pregnancy you are shooting for, get in touch with your photographer! Depending on the time of year, your photographer may be busy and you may have to work together to find a date that works for both of you. Also consider the schedule and/or availability of your partner, other children, or anyone else you plan to have with you for your maternity session.

Another thing to think about is where you want to have your photos taken. Think about other activities or events that may be taking place during the same time. It may not be best to schedule your session mid-October at a pumpkin patch. Similarly, a beach session on a July weekend might not be the most conducive to a quiet, empty background. Your photographer can work with you to pick a session location that will work to achieve the vision you have for your maternity photos.

Ultimately, it’s important to remember that the decision comes down to you. Your bump is your bump, your pregnancy is your pregnancy, and whatever week you pick will be the right one for you and your family!
