Planning ahead is key to capturing stunning cherry blossom portraits in DC! With peak bloom lasting just a week and the heavy crowds of tourists, it’s important to be prepared. As one of my most popular portrait locations, I’ve created this guide for your DC cherry blossom portrait session to help you navigate the experience and ensure you know exactly what to expect.

Book far in advance!
I receive dozens of cherry blossom inquiries each year and can only accommodate a handful to ensure my best work. To keep things fair and streamlined, this year I’m only accepting cherry blossom bookings via this link. Use it to reserve your DC cherry blossom portrait session instantly!

Weekday mornings are best.
The traffic and congestion only gets worse as the day goes on, and I don’t offer DC cherry blossom portrait sessions at all on weekends during peak bloom. Even on weekday mornings, give yourself at least an extra 30 minutes to find parking and walk to our location. DC can get crowded fast – so just plan ahead, and by limiting when I have those sessions, we’ll already be in the lower volume times (which will still feel busy).

Prepare to be a spectacle!
No matter what, expect to have an audience at your session. The Tidal Basin is SWARMED with tourists during peak bloom, even at 6am. Be prepared for hordes of crowds, tripods everywhere, and lots of well wishers. I know that having eyes on you during a session may feel a little uncomfortable, but I promise you’ll never know in the final images! After photographing DC cherry blossom portrait sessions for years, I know all the tricks to make your final images look like we’re the only ones in the area.

Bundle up and wear flats!
Despite the blooming trees, it will likely be COLD at your session! Plan to wear warm outer layers that can easily be taken on and off. Hand and foot warmers can make a huge difference in comfort level, and be sure to put base layers on whenever possible. We’ll be walking a LOT during your session which will keep us warm, but also means that comfortable footwear – at least while we’re in transition – is a must.

Be flexible!
In a dynamic, crowded environment such as the Tidal Basin during peak cherry blossom bloom, it’s crucial to trust your photographer. I’ve done this countless times and know all the hidden spots we can utilize if a particular location is too crowded! No matter what, we will capture your DC cherry blossom portrait session amongst those white and pink blooms. Just trust that your photographer will know how to move you around the basin and capture what you want!

Dress to impress for your DC cherry blossom portrait session!
The cherry blossoms at the DC Tidal Basin are truly awe inspiring, so be sure to choose elevated outfits that match the grandeur of our location. Light, neutral tones and flowing fabrics and textiles will keep the focus on you and the blooms! I love how springy these portraits always look because of the light and airy color palette between the flowers and your outfits. Pastel colors are easy to coordinate together or across your family, too!

Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a seasoned DC local, the cherry blossoms offer a breathtaking backdrop for portraits. With a little planning and the tips shared in this guide, you’ll be ready to make the most of this beautiful and fleeting season. If you’re interested in booking a session or have any questions, feel free to reach out – I’d love to help you capture these magical moments!
