Lavender fields have a way of transporting you to another world, offering a dreamy, vibrant backdrop that feels like something straight out of the South of France. The soft, purple blooms and sweet fragrance create an enchanting setting perfect for a lavender field session that’s as breathtaking as it is unforgettable. Whether you’re celebrating a special milestone or simply want to capture beautiful moments, planning a lavender field portrait session can help you make the most of this magical location. Here are a few tips to ensure your lavender field session goes smoothly and you leave with stunning images you’ll cherish forever.

Peak bloom for lavender fields is mid June to mid July.

The lavender tends to get more bright and “neon” in appearance later in the season before eventually drying up. That means your sessions will occur in the middle of summer. Just be aware that it could be warmer – even with our scheduling a session later in the day.

The lavender field is located in Hollywood, MD on a private farm.

Due to the fragrant nature of the blooms, the fields tend to attract bees. They are largely harmless, but something to consider if allergies are a concern. It’s a wonderful space for the bees, but I know they’re not everyone’s favorite! On the plus side, we’re also more likely to see other pollinators – like butterflies – which is super fun for the little ones!

All lavender field sessions are held at sunrise or 1-2 hours before sunset.

This is to ensure the best possible light during your session, as well as to mitigate the warm temperatures as there is not any shade at this location. We’re going to get that gorgeous dreamy sunlight in your portraits photographing your session so close to sunset! I love photographing sessions at this time of night, no matter the location. But there is something extra magical about those beautiful purple flowers and a setting sun. See inspiration from a past lavender field session!

When it comes to styling, soft neutrals work best for the farm.

Think airy, flowing textures in shades of cream, taupe, dusty blue, and ivory. Avoid bold, harsh colors and play into the elevated romanticism of the location. This is the opportunity to pull out your favorite dresses, wide brimmed hats, and delicate parasols. This is a fun location to play with props you might not otherwise think to include in your portrait session. Anything that feels soft and French is a definite go in a lavender field!

With a little preparation and the right mindset, your lavender field portrait session will be an experience you’ll never forget. From the golden hour light to the sea of purple blooms, these sessions provide an opportunity to create truly memorable, beautiful images. Keep these tips in mind as you plan, and don’t forget to relax, enjoy the moment, and let the natural beauty of the lavender field work its magic.
