A Spring Maternity Session at Washington National Cathedral

Lindsey and Andrew’s maternity session at Washington National Cathedral was gorgeous – and had the most perfect timing (since Lindsey delivered just days after our time together!). I’m so happy we were able to pull this off for them. When Lindsey and Andrew told me how important their faith was to them, I immediately thought of the Washington National Cathedral as the perfect spot for their portrait session. It wound up being an ideal spot for this special moment in their lives!

Spring Maternity Session at Washington National Cathedral

This location has been on my dream list for years, and I was beyond thrilled to finally have the opportunity to shoot there – thank you Lindsey and Andrew! The cathedral grounds are absolutely breathtaking—reminiscent of Paris with its soaring Gothic architecture and quiet, contemplative gardens. We wandered through lush, green paths, under arches that felt like something out of a fairytale. It was the perfect setting to celebrate not only this chapter in their faith journey, but also the soon-to-arrive newest member of their family.

Planning Portraits at the National Cathedral

The National Cathedral does require a permit to photograph on the grounds, but in my opinion, it’s absolutely worth it. The space is peaceful and relatively secluded, which creates a beautiful sense of intimacy during a session. Plus, there are plenty of covered alcoves and archways—ideal if the weather turns (which it nearly did!). The forecast had us watching the skies all week. We debated postponing the shoot, but ultimately decided to go for it since Lindsey was already nearly full term. I’m so glad we didn’t wait—baby Bonnie made her grand entrance just 48 hours later! (Stay tuned for her newborn session next month!)

Choosing Attire for Your Maternity Session

Lindsey looked radiant in a flowing, cream-colored gown that moved so beautifully against the soft stone and greenery. The classic color palette paired perfectly with the historic feel of the cathedral and brought such a quiet elegance to every frame. I’m all about choosing something that makes you feel comfortable and beautiful. Maternity sessions are often late in your pregnancy, so choose something that flows and that you can then use to show off your baby bump. I love how timeless Lindsey’s look was! She was a glowing mama-to-be! See more tips for your maternity session here!
