Nothing says summer portraits like lavender field family photos! It’s one of the reasons I wanted to share tips for lavender field family photos with you today. This rolling lavender field is by far my most requested portrait location in southern Maryland, and for good reason! It’s a stunning piece of property, nestled along the Patuxent River in southern Maryland. The light is spectacular, and the fragrance of the lavender truly envelops you in calm from the moment you step into the fields. However, it’s also a surprisingly tricky location, and getting these incredible lavender field family photos takes a little more planning than you might think.

Here are five tips for lavender field family photos!

Choose the perfect session time.

All lavender field sessions must take place within 60-90 minutes of sunset – typically with a start time of 7PM. This is due to the extreme summer heat that always coincides with lavender bloom, as well as due to lighting conditions at the field. That golden hour glow is what really makes the lavender pop! This is truly one of my favorite tips for lavender field family photos. It sets the tone of your photos immediately!

Anticipate the wildlife.

Humans aren’t the only ones drawn to the fragrant fields! Pollinators such as butterflies and bees will be in abundance at your session. They tend to leave us alone, however please prepare your children for this in advance and understand that some kids may have some fear when they first arrive. I’ve found that a little bug spray and a pep talk goes a long way!

Wear light colors!

A light, neutral color palette of loose, flowing fabrics will complement the location beautifully. It’s a chance to really lean into simple and elegant attire for your family. Light colors won’t take away from the sweet purples and greens we’ll find in the field.

Incorporate thoughtful props.

The lavender fields are the perfect location for a picnic spread, or perhaps you could bring parasols to help shield the sun. I always bring a simple white blanket to all of my sessions as a base, but feel free to incorporate anything that’s meaningful to you.
