When it comes to engagement photos, I’m all about making the session feel personal and true to your relationship. One of my favorite ways to do that is to include your dog! For so many couples, a pup is part of the family, so it only makes sense to bring them along for this special season of your life. Not only do dogs add a little extra joy and cuteness to your gallery, but they also make your images feel even more authentic. However, there are a few things to keep in mind when bringing your dog along. Here are 5 tips for including your dog in your engagement photos to ensure a fun, stress-free experience for everyone.

5 Tips for Including Your Dog in Your Engagement Photos
Tip #1: Have a plan for your pup!
It is extremely helpful to have an extra set of hands at your session to help with your pup. I suggest enlisting a friend or family member to tag along to your session to care for your dog when they’re not in photos. Typically, I will try to do all the photos with the dog towards the beginning, and leave the second part of the session for couple portraits. Another option is to shoot at or near your home for at least part of the session, so that the dog can easily be dropped back off at home.

Tip #2: Pack your doggy essentials
Always make sure to have everything your dog will need on hand! I highly recommend bringing a neutral leash and collar! You don’t want the leash color to clash with your outfits and cause distractions. Bring along a few waste bags – just in case! High value treats are another must-have to reward your dog along the way. If it’s hot, be sure to bring water for them as well!

Tip #3: Arrive early and take your dog on a walk
If possible, arrive at your session with your dog a little early. Dogs are often extra excited when they go to new places or meet new people. Even if your dog is super relaxed at home, they sometimes get a burst of energy at a new location. Arriving early and allowing your dog to sniff and explore helps them get familiar with the area and burn off some of that excited energy. Going for a nice long walk right before your session is also key as it helps get additional energy out, which helps dogs be more responsive to commands, which in turn will help me capture those natural portraits you’ll love.

Tip #4: Expect some chaos
The first few minutes will be a little wild while your dog gets used to me! This is normal! Try your best to stay relaxed and have a good time. The more relaxed you are, the more relaxed your dog will feel! Rest assured that as a dog-owner myself I am totally used to their playful energy, and I will ensure we get all the images we need.

Tip #5: Consider your location
When including your dog in your engagement photos, it is important to ensure ahead of time that your location is dog-friendly. You just don’t want to find out at the last minute that your pup isn’t welcome and have to quickly think of a new place to go. Consider a quiet and secluded location in order to ensure your dog’s safety and comfort during the session. An at-home session can be perfect for pets as well and can add an intimate touch to your engagement session. I love the relaxed, comforting vibe of in-home sessions.

Including your dog in your engagement photos does take a little extra planning, but it’s always worth it. Your engagement images aren’t just about looking polished; they’re about celebrating the life you’re building together, and for many couples, that story wouldn’t be complete without their pup!
