The Heavy Hitters: Camera Bodies & Lenses

Camera Bodies: Reliability Is Everything

First things first: the camera bodies.

I always arrive with two Nikon Z8 cameras, and no, it’s not just to look like a high-tech Lara Croft.

In the world of weddings, reliability is everything. Carrying dual bodies is my built-in insurance policy. If a shutter ever decides to retire mid-ceremony (it hasn’t, but we don’t test fate), I’m instantly covered. More importantly, having two cameras allows me to keep different focal lengths ready at all times.

The shift from a wide ceremony scene to the quiet tremble in a groom’s expression happens in seconds. I’m not thinking about changing lenses, I’m already documenting it.

For cocktail hour and candid storytelling, I also carry my Fujifilm X100VI. It’s lightweight, unobtrusive, and perfect for weaving through guests to capture the joy as it naturally unfolds. Its small profile helps guests forget there’s even a camera present, and that’s when the best moments unfold.

I don’t pack lenses just because they’re high-end optics or because they look impressive in a bag. Each one has a very specific role in telling your story, capturing not just images but emotions, moments, and details that might otherwise go unnoticed. Some lenses allow me to immerse myself in the energy of a room, others give me the intimacy to isolate a fleeting expression, and a few let me preserve the smallest elements that hold the biggest meaning: the texture of lace, the glint of a ring, the shimmer of a carefully chosen invitation.

Choosing the right lens for the right moment is about more than technical precision; it’s about storytelling. Weddings are full of tiny masterpieces: the engraving inside your ring, the intricate lace on your veil, the delicate texture of your stationery suite.

My macro lens ensures those details don’t get lost in the pace of the day. These small elements often carry enormous meaning: heirloom pieces, intentional design choices, carefully selected finishing touches. They deserve their moment.

Lighting & Stability: Keeping the Atmosphere Intact

Lighting can transform a photograph, but it should never transform the guest experience.

I use on-camera and handheld flashes only. You won’t see light stands scattered across the dance floor or interrupting a carefully designed reception layout. I am deeply respectful of the planner’s floor plan, the designer’s vision, and the atmosphere you’ve curated.

For receptions and high-energy dance floors, my flashes allow me to freeze motion, capture movement creatively, and maintain that editorial edge, all without disrupting the room.

And then there’s the unglamorous but critical side of things: memory and power.

I carry an almost never-ending supply of dual-slot memory cards and fully charged batteries. Every important moment is recorded redundantly, and I rotate cards throughout the day. If the goal is peace of mind, this is where it starts.

The Secret Weapons (The Real MVPs)

This is usually everyone’s favorite part, because these are the items that don’t always make it into Instagram captions.

Stepanie, the Stepstool

Yes, she has a name.

Stepanie is my trusty stepstool, and for my fellow short queens, she is essential. Whether I’m shooting flat lays, large group portraits, or trying to get a slightly elevated angle during the ceremony, that extra height makes a world of difference.

The Styling Kit (Minimal, But Intentional)

I keep my styling aids intentionally minimal because I want your design to shine — not mine.

Before the wedding, I coordinate closely with you and your planning team to understand your color palette and aesthetic. This allows me to bring pieces that complement, rather than compete with, your design.

I use Chasing Stone styling mats so I can photograph details beautifully anywhere: whether the venue has ideal surfaces or not. I also bring acrylic risers to add depth and dimension to paper goods, along with a curated selection of small dishes and ring boxes that blend seamlessly into your aesthetic.

The goal is elevated, editorial detail shots that still feel yours authentically.

Energy & Endurance

A wedding day is a marathon, physically and creatively.

In my bag (or sometimes in the car), you’ll find a small cooler bag packed with Alani energy drinks and Uncrustables for quick fuel between transitions. I’ve learned that if I don’t take care of my energy, I can’t give you my best.

I also keep tinted moisturizer with SPF on hand and reapply throughout the day, especially during summer weddings. Sunburn is not on the shot list.

When the reception hits, I change into a fresh pair of comfortable shoes; usually Birdies or Rothy’s, so I can move quickly and confidently through the dance floor chaos.

The Rain Plan

Clear umbrellas live in my car at all times.

Rain on your wedding day doesn’t scare me. In fact, it can create some of the most romantic, cinematic images, as long as we’re prepared.

The Setup: How I Carry It All

On my body during ceremonies, you’ll always see my Holdfast leather holster. It’s an absolute must.

• A full extra outfit for myself (you never know what might happen!).
