If you’ve ever wondered what truly goes into creating a seamless wedding experience behind the scenes, consider this my Photographer’s Guide to a Flawless Wedding Day: starting with what’s inside my bag. But it’s not just about the gear; it’s about how every tool, every choice, and every small preparation comes together to ensure nothing is missed, and every moment is captured beautifully.
A wedding day is unlike any other photography session. It’s a carefully choreographed mix of planned moments and pure unpredictability. One minute, the morning light filters softly through the bridal suite windows while champagne corks pop and bridesmaids laugh; the next, a last-minute timeline change, shifting light, or an impromptu dance-off on the reception floor demands rapid adjustment. These are the moments where preparation meets opportunity, and being ready is the difference between a snapshot and a story that truly lasts.

The secret to a flawless wedding day isn’t just having a good eye. It’s preparation, strategy, and having a solution for every “just in case” scenario. It’s knowing how to move quickly yet gracefully through the day, anticipating emotion before it even unfolds, and keeping an eye on both the sweeping and intimate details that make a wedding uniquely yours.
Being prepared allows me to stay calm, creative, and fully present, so you, your family, and your guests can stay in the moment without interruption. Every lens I carry, every flash I pack, and every styling aid I bring exists for a purpose: to support the storytelling, to preserve the atmosphere, and to honor the care and effort you’ve poured into your day.
Today, I’m pulling back the curtain on my bag and the intentional choices that make this possible. From essential camera gear to my secret “just in case” items, you’ll see exactly what goes into capturing a wedding flawlessly, no detail overlooked, no moment missed.

The Heavy Hitters: Camera Bodies & Lenses
Camera Bodies: Reliability Is Everything
First things first: the camera bodies.
I always arrive with two Nikon Z8 cameras, and no, it’s not just to look like a high-tech Lara Croft.
In the world of weddings, reliability is everything. Carrying dual bodies is my built-in insurance policy. If a shutter ever decides to retire mid-ceremony (it hasn’t, but we don’t test fate), I’m instantly covered. More importantly, having two cameras allows me to keep different focal lengths ready at all times.
The shift from a wide ceremony scene to the quiet tremble in a groom’s expression happens in seconds. I’m not thinking about changing lenses, I’m already documenting it.
For cocktail hour and candid storytelling, I also carry my Fujifilm X100VI. It’s lightweight, unobtrusive, and perfect for weaving through guests to capture the joy as it naturally unfolds. Its small profile helps guests forget there’s even a camera present, and that’s when the best moments unfold.

The Lens Lineup: My Storytellers
If the camera is the brain, the lenses are the soul the tools that allow me to see the world as it truly unfolds.
I don’t pack lenses just because they’re high-end optics or because they look impressive in a bag. Each one has a very specific role in telling your story, capturing not just images but emotions, moments, and details that might otherwise go unnoticed. Some lenses allow me to immerse myself in the energy of a room, others give me the intimacy to isolate a fleeting expression, and a few let me preserve the smallest elements that hold the biggest meaning: the texture of lace, the glint of a ring, the shimmer of a carefully chosen invitation.
Choosing the right lens for the right moment is about more than technical precision; it’s about storytelling. It’s about anticipating emotion and being ready to capture it from the perfect perspective, at the perfect time. This is why my lens lineup is carefully curated, each one a vital instrument in bringing the narrative of your day to life.
The Storyteller (35mm & 58mm)
These are my go-to lenses for the “real” moments. They see the world in a way that feels intimate and immersive. Close enough to feel connected, wide enough to hold context. Bridesmaids laughing over champagne, your mom fastening the last button on your dress, your grandma’s “get it, girl” face on the dance floor. This is where these lenses shine.
They allow you to feel like you’re there when you look back at your gallery.
The Portrait King (85mm)
This lens is responsible for that dreamy, creamy background everyone loves. During couple portraits, it isolates you most beautifully; soft, flattering, romantic. It makes you look like the only two people in the world, even if we’re standing in the middle of a bustling venue.
It’s classic. It’s timeless. It’s magic.
The Finishing Touch (Macro Lens)
Weddings are full of tiny masterpieces: the engraving inside your ring, the intricate lace on your veil, the delicate texture of your stationery suite.
My macro lens ensures those details don’t get lost in the pace of the day. These small elements often carry enormous meaning: heirloom pieces, intentional design choices, carefully selected finishing touches. They deserve their moment.

Lighting & Stability: Keeping the Atmosphere Intact
Lighting can transform a photograph, but it should never transform the guest experience.
I use on-camera and handheld flashes only. You won’t see light stands scattered across the dance floor or interrupting a carefully designed reception layout. I am deeply respectful of the planner’s floor plan, the designer’s vision, and the atmosphere you’ve curated.
For receptions and high-energy dance floors, my flashes allow me to freeze motion, capture movement creatively, and maintain that editorial edge, all without disrupting the room.
And then there’s the unglamorous but critical side of things: memory and power.
I carry an almost never-ending supply of dual-slot memory cards and fully charged batteries. Every important moment is recorded redundantly, and I rotate cards throughout the day. If the goal is peace of mind, this is where it starts.

The Secret Weapons (The Real MVPs)
This is usually everyone’s favorite part, because these are the items that don’t always make it into Instagram captions.
Stepanie, the Stepstool
Yes, she has a name.
Stepanie is my trusty stepstool, and for my fellow short queens, she is essential. Whether I’m shooting flat lays, large group portraits, or trying to get a slightly elevated angle during the ceremony, that extra height makes a world of difference.
The Styling Kit (Minimal, But Intentional)
I keep my styling aids intentionally minimal because I want your design to shine — not mine.
Before the wedding, I coordinate closely with you and your planning team to understand your color palette and aesthetic. This allows me to bring pieces that complement, rather than compete with, your design.
I use Chasing Stone styling mats so I can photograph details beautifully anywhere: whether the venue has ideal surfaces or not. I also bring acrylic risers to add depth and dimension to paper goods, along with a curated selection of small dishes and ring boxes that blend seamlessly into your aesthetic.
The goal is elevated, editorial detail shots that still feel yours authentically.
Energy & Endurance
A wedding day is a marathon, physically and creatively.
In my bag (or sometimes in the car), you’ll find a small cooler bag packed with Alani energy drinks and Uncrustables for quick fuel between transitions. I’ve learned that if I don’t take care of my energy, I can’t give you my best.
I also keep tinted moisturizer with SPF on hand and reapply throughout the day, especially during summer weddings. Sunburn is not on the shot list.
When the reception hits, I change into a fresh pair of comfortable shoes; usually Birdies or Rothy’s, so I can move quickly and confidently through the dance floor chaos.
The Rain Plan
Clear umbrellas live in my car at all times.
Rain on your wedding day doesn’t scare me. In fact, it can create some of the most romantic, cinematic images, as long as we’re prepared.

The Setup: How I Carry It All
On my body during ceremonies, you’ll always see my Holdfast leather holster. It’s an absolute must.
It allows me to carry two camera bodies simultaneously, hands-free, and switch between them instantly. No fumbling. No downtime. Just fluid transitions from wide to tight compositions.
My main gear travels in a Kamrette backpack that stays with me at all times. It carries my primary camera body, lens, flash, memory cards, and batteries: the essentials I can’t afford to be separated from.
I also bring a larger roller bag for backup gear and less frequently used items. It stays nearby but out of the way, ensuring I’m prepared without being intrusive.

The Emergency Kit: Prepared for Anything
Beyond gear, preparation means planning for the unexpected.
I always bring:
- A full extra outfit for myself (you never know what might happen!).
- Backup equipment, always.
- A small first aid kit for myself and my team, so nothing keeps us from performing at our best.
When I say I come prepared, I mean it.

It’s Not Just About the Gear
At the end of the day, what’s in my bag matters — but how I use it matters even more. Every camera, lens, flash, and styling tool has a purpose, but the real story is in how they come together to tell yours.
The cameras and lenses let me capture your story with clarity and intention. The lighting preserves the mood, whether it’s the soft glow of a sunset ceremony or the vibrant energy of the reception dance floor. The styling tools ensure that the little details: your rings, invitations, and heirlooms, are presented beautifully, just as you imagined. And the emergency kit? It keeps everything running smoothly, so nothing gets in the way of capturing those once-in-a-lifetime moments.
But the real magic? It’s not in the equipment. It’s about being fully present. It’s in anticipating emotion before it even happens. It’s knowing when to step in and when to step back, letting life unfold naturally. The gear gives me the freedom to do this: to move confidently, react instinctively, and focus entirely on you.
Now that you know all of my secret weapons, why not see them in action? Check out this wedding to see how each piece of gear contributed to capturing a day full of authentic moments, laughter, and love.
If you’re a photographer reading this, what’s the one item you can’t leave home without? And if you’re a bride, what’s the detail you’re most excited to see captured on your wedding day? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
