The Umphrey Family | A Southern Maryland Generational Portrait Session

More familiar faces to share today! I met the Umphrey family at Jefferson Patterson Park for a generational portrait session, right as a light morning rain let up. It was perfect timing, and we had the park all to ourselves! JPP is one of my favorite southern Maryland locations for families, because the light is beautiful and the trees are green year round.

Fun fact: I photographed two of these kiddos’ newborn sessions! Lylian was one of the first newborns I ever photographed, and Audrey was part of our rainbow baby project last year. It definitely felt like meeting up with old friends, which is my favorite kind of session!

It seems like many photographers dread extended family portrait sessions, but honestly? I love them SO much. Yes, they’re a little chaotic, and a lot more work than a typical session … but the end result is so, so wonderful. I always find myself tearing up while editing the group portraits. No family is perfect, but I hope these portraits remind my clients how wonderful they are together and make them proud of the legacy they’ve created. Plus, seeing grandparents with their grand babies just melts my heart!

During generational sessions, we always try to get the “big” portrait done first while everyone is fresh. Mission accomplished here! This was literally two minutes into their session! Then we break out into smaller groupings, essentially giving each family their own little mini session. This works well because it gives everyone a break from being photographed at some point! You’d hardly know it, but one of these kiddos was NOT on board with the whole photo session idea … I won’t name any names, but scroll through for some hilarious outtakes!

I always tell my families that these sessions will FEEL like pure chaos, but the final result will be so worth it. That was definitely true here! We built in plenty of fun play time for the kids to keep them happy and engaged. The result is some seriously stunning candids!

Please enjoy a few of my favorites, and thank you SO much for trusting me!

There’s something undeniably captivating about the waterfront. Maryland’s waterfront venues, whether tucked along the Chesapeake Bay, lining the Eastern Shore, or framed by historic piers, have a way of making portraits feel expansive without ever feeling empty. The light shimmers across the water, the horizon stretches open, and every angle offers a new composition. Portraits […]
